What Programs does EarthLearn offer?

Primary Elementary (K-2): The Fieldtrip in a Room
Kindergarten through second grade is an active time in the academic life of children. EarthLearn feels this is the time to build foundations. We seek to support the classroom teachers by introducing and reinforcing the science, literacy, and mathematical skills they are developing in the classroom. Our programs are designed to create a base of knowledge to be further explored and expanded in the Upper Elementary programs.

Topics include such concepts as:

  • What kind of animal is it?
  • Animals have families, too!
  • How do I care for my animal friends?

For each 90 minute program, stations will be set up to create a visual, tactile, and auditory experience to simulate a fieldtrip taking the students outside of their normal school day without actually leaving their schools.

Upper Elementary (3-6): Expeditions
The students in third through sixth grades enjoy learning about animal physiology, habitats and adaptations and the differences between predators and prey.

Upper Elementary programs are conducted in three increments.

  • First, an EarthLearn teacher visits the classroom and imparts a 90 to 120 minute curriculum designed to build the necessary background knowledge prior to the field trip.
  • Second, students visit a location or habitat which reinforces and exemplifies the lesson they learned in their classroom.
  • Third, back in their classroom, students are debriefed on their experiences in the field and are offered opportunities to see and touch animals which embody the curriculum featured for their grade level.

Junior High (7-8): Intermediate Explorations of the Natural Earth
EarthLearn is committed to educating our young people throughout their school career. Junior High/Middle School programs will follow the same format as the Upper Elementary programs and, as always, the curriculum will be keyed to state standards.

In addition, extracurricular programs are offered to allow students the opportunity to participate in service learning focused on environmental concerns. A club-like organization allows students to interact with other people their age who are interested in learning about and volunteering to improve their local environment.

High School (9-12): Advanced Explorations of the Natural Earth
High school programs are intended to support biology and AP Biology classes. An extracurricular program will be offered to allow students to volunteer in their local and regional areas. Volunteer opportunities may include a variety of activities from habitat restoration to mentoring younger children. Additionally, students may also be offered the opportunity to participate in environmental efforts throughout the country and, hopefully, around the world.

Continuing On Your Own
Resources and suggestions for implementing community service and service learning will be offered to all teachers and schools participating in EarthLearn programs. Each year, recognition will be offered to those who have implemented and continued their environmental efforts throughout the year. Separate categories will include: Individual Classroom, Combined Grade Level, and Combined School Programs.
